Replay AV 8 - Stream Capture FAQ

What is stream capture and how is it different from audio recording?

The Stream Capture function downloads the content directly from the network stream. Stream capture has many advantages over the other recording methods.

  • You can record silently without using the sound card.

  • You can record multiple streams at the same time.

  • You get perfect reproduction and the smallest possible file size.

  • Background noises are always eliminated.

To take full advantage of Replay AV, always set your show's properties to "capture by downloading" and "stream capture". You'll find these options in the "recording" tab of each of your scheduled shows. Remember to always use a URL that is direct to the audio/video stream itself (not the URL of a web page). If you not know the URL of the content that you want to capture, use the URL Finder to detect the URL for you.

Note: The Quick Audio Record function does not stream capture. It is intended to record any audio that is playing on your computer. Quick Record uses your sound card to record. In most cases, Stream Capture is the best option.

How do I stream capture video?

Replay AV allows you to capture your favorite streaming videos quickly and easily. In most cases the video will download much more quickly than it takes to play the original stream.

  1. Start the Recording Wizard and choose Record Something Right Now. Click Capture a Video or Audio Clip to bring up the Stream Capture/URL Finder.
Or, click on the Tools menu, then URL Finder.
  2. Play the online video stream.
  3. The Stream Capture/URL Finder will detect the URL of the video. It may detect more than one URL. The most recent will be at the top of the list.
  4. Highlight the URL of the video, and click the Add Selection as New Recording button.
  5. Provide a name for your video. The record now option is selected by default. Click OK and your video will begin to download immediately.

The Stream Capture / URL Finder does not detect any URL's.

First, always make sure that you start the URL Finder prior to browsing to the media that you want detected. Also, be sure that you've selected your network adapter at the bottom of the URL Finder window.

In Windows Vista, the URL Finder cannot detect your network adapter if User Account Control is enabled. You must turn OFF User Account Control in order to enable the URL Finder.

Also, sometimes YouTube and Google videos are cached if you've already played them once. This can prevent the URL Finder from seeing them. If you've already played the video once, re-start the browser or clear its cache before opening the stream capture/URL Finder.

I get an error message when Replay AV attempts to convert my recorded file.

My recordings are splitting into more files than I want.

Sometimes when stream capturing live streams, there are gaps in the transmission resulting in automatic splits. Try increasing the Stream Capture Time Out setting. This is located in Replay A/V's Main Settings, under the Tuning tab.

Stream capture records silently. That's great, but I want to listen to the station.

You can listen to any station in your managed show list at any time, even while stream capturing. Simply highlight the station in your managed show list and click the "Tune" option. Keep in mind that the "Tune" function is best used with audio, not video.

Replay AV attempts to connect to the stream, but fails to record.

If you are seeing a "connecting" message, but Replay AV fails to stream capture, most likely the URL entered into the show's properties is not correct or has recently changed. Check that the URL is valid by clicking the "Tune" button. Use the Stream Capture/URL Finder to detect the actual URL of the media stream.

If the show was added to your list from our Media Guide, please report an invalid URL so that we can update the database.
