What is RTMP Recording and Downloading?
Real Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP) is a commonly used protocol (developed by Adobe Systems - the makers of Flash and PDF) to stream video and music from web sites. This protocol is used by a lot of video and live webcam sites, and cannot be downloaded using a web page.
Replay Media Catcher will detect videos and music streamed over RTMP and try to create another connection to download it. If Replay Media Catcher can download the stream then there is no need to continue playing the stream in your browser.
Many web sites use technology that creates a unique URL each time a video or audio stream is requested, which can only be used once. This makes the download method ineffective, so Replay Media Catcher will record it as it plays in your browser. See SWF Verification for further details. Replay Media Catcher contains settings (under Tools, Settings) where you can specify that all RTMP streams should be recorded instead of downloaded. You can also specify individual sites that should use the record method instead. This can be useful if you want to watch a video whilst you record it.
Replay Media Catcher displays whether it is downloading or recording RTMP next to the streams progress.
How do I watch a video whilst it is being downloaded?
When Replay Media Catcher detects a compatible stream it will try and create another connection to download the video. When Replay Media Catcher is downloading there is no need to continue to play the video or music in your browser!
Sometimes it is not possible for Replay Media Catcher to download as the stream is secured in some manner. In these instances Replay Media Catcher will detect the stream is secure and begin to record the stream as it plays in your browser. When Replay Media Catcher is recording a stream you must continue to play the video or music in your browser. If you stop, then Replay Media Catcher will detect this and also stop recording.
Replay Media Catcher displays whether it is Downloading or Recording progress in front of each streams progress.
Replay Media Catcher sometimes downloads an SWF file which I can't convert to play. How can I get rid of these?
An SWF file (acronym of "Shockwave Flash" pronounced swiff) is a flash application that is playing in your browser. In the context of Replay Media Catcher, this is normally the player that hosts the video or music but could also be an ad or some other application. Replay Media Catcher can not convert SWF files into any other format so if you have a conversion preset selected this will result in conversion error.
To stop SWF downloading: If you don't want to detect and download SWF files then open Tools, Settings and remove the application/x-shockwave-flash (SWF) entry from the Content Type/File Extension list.
Why are videos and songs being recorded/downloaded with strange file names?
Naming downloaded videos automatically is tricky. The issue is that all sites stream in different formats and manners. Much of the time the stream Replay Media Catcher records comes from a completely different site than that hosting the video. We use a variety of techniques to try and detect the best name possible for a downloaded/recorded stream - the majority of the time Replay Media Catcher gets it right.
In the cases Replay Media Catcher can't find a good video name, you can rename files directly from within Replay Media Catcher. Just right-click the stream and choose Rename from the menu.
If you wish to send us web site(s) that consistently give gobbly gook file names then please do so - provide as many details as possible.
Replay Media Catcher fails to record a stream with "Complete with errors. Double click to view". What do I do now?
Double click the entry in Replay Media Catcher and scroll though the log file and see what the issue is.
